2011 Simon Quiat Memorial Scholarship

Bill Berger and Hannah Garelick
of Boulder
Denver B'nai B'rith #171 awarded its 2011 Quiat Scholarship to Hannah Garelick of Boulder.  The $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a top high school senior active in BBYO (B'nai B'rith Youth Organization).  B'nai B'rith selects the winner on the basis of personal achievement, including service to BBYO, school and extra-curricular accomplishments, and the quality of an essay submitted with the scholarship application.

The Simon Quiat Memorial Scholarship is given in the memory of Simon Quiat (1887-1981), a prominent community leader remembered for his philanthropic activities and his unwavering support of B'nai B'rith and BBYO (BBYO is made up of AZA for high school-aged boys, and BBG for girls).  Quiat was Denver's first-ever AZA chapter advisor and a past president of Denver B'nai B'rith.

Bill Berger, B'nai B'rith Denver president, presented the check and certificate to Garelick at the final night banquet of the Rocky Mountain Region BBYO annual convention on December 20, 2011.  Berger also announced that B'nai B'rith will add a $500 award in 2012 for a second place winner.  The award is funded by Bnai B'rith's local I. Rude Trust.
