B’nai B’rith International Appoints New Chairman of the Executive

Gary P. Saltzman, of Centennial, Colo., was appointed chairman of the executive of B’nai B’rith International by newly elected President Allan Jacobs at the Board of Governors meeting on May 22.

The chairman of the executive is the number two volunteer leadership position in the international organization. It is the COE’s responsibility to serve as chairman of the executive committee, be the direct liaison with volunteers and carry out other internal and external responsibilities.

An active member of B’nai B’rith for more than 25 years, Saltzman first served as a leader in 1986 as the president of Denver Lodge and remains a member of the Denver Lodge board. In 1989, he received the prestigious Label A. Katz Young Leadership Award, given to leaders who embody the goals of B’nai B’rith and advance the aims of the B’nai B’rith Young Leadership program. Saltzman has also served on the International Board of Governors and the Executive, Budget and Strategic Planning Committees and most recently as senior vice president.

Saltzman is a certified public accountant with Wenner, Silvestain & Company, LLC—a firm he joined 37 years ago and of which he became a co-owner 1980. He is also a registered investment advisor with WS Investment Advisors, LLC, which he co-founded in 1999.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We are long past the midway point of 2011, and are quickly approaching autumn and the High Holidays. I hope your summer has been full of many exciting activities. Denver B’nai B’rith remains extremely active, and I would like to share a few of this year’s highlights with you.

Thanks especially to the continuing efforts of Ed Koplin, we had another successful Leadville Jewish Cemetery weekend, the end of June. Of course, we did our traditional activities of cleaning up, painting, organizing, serving meals and conducting havdalah on Saturday and a brief memorial service at the cemetery on Sunday.

And this year, in conjunction with the Leadville activities, we performed an additional mitzvah. Denver B’nai B’rith has purchased a nearly 100-year-old Polish torah and has had it restored.  It is now certified as “kosher” and now can be used again for religious services.  We held a wonderful shabbat service on Saturday in the refurbished Temple Israel (thanks to Bill Korn and the Temple Israel Foundation), which included a rededication ceremony of the torah.  The service was officiated by four rabbis:  Rabbi Debra Rappaport of B’nai Vail Congregation; Rabbi Birdie Becker, Temple Emanuel, Pueblo (and former B’nai B’rith Administrator); Rabbi Joel Schwartzman of the Synagogue of the Summit; and Rabbi David Segal of the Aspen Jewish Congregation – and was attended by nearly 90 people!  Saturday and Sunday combined, we served between 200 and 250 meals to congregants, volunteers, and some of the Leadville community at St. George’s Episcopal Church.

In addition to the congregations mentioned above, many thanks to our other co-sponsoring organizations: Birthright NEXT Colorado, JConnect, Chabad of Vail, the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society, and the Temple Israel Foundation.

Under the leadership of Rebecca Saltzman, chairman of our Young Professionals group, many in their 20s and 30s are participating in newly organized events.  These have included camping at Turquoise Lake near Leadville; a late Saturday “slosh-ball” competition, several happy hours, and an upcoming paintball tournament.  In addition to offering enjoyable activities with a little mitzvah thrown in, B’nai B’rith offers many leadership opportunities for men and women looking for a meaningful connection with Denver’s Jewish community.

And, finally, largely due to the vision and tenacity of B’nai B’rith board member Norm Replin, I am also pleased to report the creation of a new organization.  B’nai B’rith is proud to be a founding sponsor of the Denver Jewish Chamber of Commerce.  This new Chamber will provide opportunities for networking and business development among businesses and professionals within and serving the Jewish community.  And B’nai B’rith will continue to provide outlets for community service and humanitarian outreach for B’nai B’rith and Chamber members alike.  Both Norm and I serve on the board of directors of the Chamber, and are excited about how these two organizations will complement and support each other for many years to come.  Look for information about the Chamber’s official kick-off event, coming soon.

May you and your families have a happy and healthy New Year, and may 5772 be a good year for all of us and our fellow Jews throughout the world.  L’shana Tovah.
